How do interagency transfers work for federal jobs?

If I work for the VA and want to transfer to the Post office, what is the procedure?

1. I transfered from the National Institutes of Health to the National Park Service after accepting a position with them. On my SF-52, I requested a transfer (as opposed to a resignation). Your personnel files will be forwarded to your new HR office, but you'll still need to go through all of the new employee formalities, (ie. W-2 documents, direct deposit forms, etc.) typically on the first day you start the new job. Other than that there's not much else that happens.
