How do we figure out how much NC state taxes combined with federal taxes would be deducted from our paychecks? I am trying to help out some friends that are thinking about moving to North Carolina. NC Pre-employment drug screening? I've had a couple good interviews with a company. I received a call from the HR recruiter and he said - I must complete the drug screening/background check before an offer is made. I was told "there's no point in making an offer when come to find out you fail the screening." Is this legal? I've changed jobs before and it has always been, offer made/accepted - then you go do the screenings/checks.. Did this company violate NC/federal laws? Don't get me wrong, I want the job and will pass any/all tests. I've just always accepted the offer, then a couple days later do the testing/screenings..

1099R question, multi state resident.? i lived in NC Jan. 1, 2009 until Sept. 30, 2009. I received a 1099 R for the retirement I took after I left my job in NC. I moved to California. I received the check in November, while I was living in California. Is that money considered California income or North Carolina income? I paid into the account in while living and working in NC but, again, received the final check in November while in CA. I also paid the NC and federal taxes on the check. Thanks for your help! Oh, I have earned no (zero) income since moving here to CA) besides getting that check. So do I even need to file a CA return?

Will the IRS come after me when I file next year.? okay, last year I worked 2 jobs. One at a FF place that gave me a W2 515.92- Wages 26.11- Federal Income Tax Withheld 7.47- Medicare then the other job as an independent contractor that gave me a 1099-misc 3770.00 Non-Employee compensation -------------------------... I tried so hard to file, I did so much research and I just couldn't figure it out (which made me feel real bad beacuse I'm going to school for accounting but we haven't covered tax yet.) the problem was that I was not only working with a 1099 that did int take any income tax out (I received full cash at that job), I could have handled that, but It got really complicated with the regular W2 thrown in. One form said that I owed 500 dollars... I was completely broke at the time (and Had just lost the 2nd job) so I had no way of paying that year I went from 17yrsold to 18, I'm a full time student (went from HS to college that year) and I have no dependents beacuse I still live with my parents. I remember hearing that there was a cutoff where If you made so little you didin't have to file, I looked it up and I can't remember the exact figure But I was below it (I only made like 4grand in a year after all) I just didint send anything In...at all. I am putting together a new hire packet for my company (which is located in North Carolina) to include all paperwork that needs to be completed by new hires. So far I have the following documents: *Original Application *NC-4 Employee's Witholing Certificate (is this required?) *Federal W-4 Form *I-9 Form *Health and Safety Training Log to be completed upon completion of initial health and safety training *Copy of job description What else is necessary or required for the employee's personnel file? Do I have any legal rights in this wage overpayment issue? I was a teacher with a large NC public school system for 7 years. In my first year of teaching I was overpaid by $3,000+ dollars and had to pay that all back my second year, due to someone entering me as a 10-year experience level instead of a 0. Last year I left my job on maternity leave and then an extended personal leave of one year. This year--a year after leaving my job--I received notice that I was again overpaid by $1,500+. I was told the reason was twofold: because they forgot to deduct the $50 sub pay from my leave days, and because year-round employees who do not finish the entire school year are always overpaid (yes, those were the exact words from the compensation services secretary). I am irate that this has happened to me twice, but I am even more irate that the school system *knew* that I would be overpaid yet waited until I was unemployed for an entire year before reporting that information to me. Not only am I expected to repay the entire amount, but I will also have to file amended W-2s and will possibly owe more in federal/state taxes--not to mention the hassle! The county went so far as to suggest I speak with a tax representative, but refused to cover that expense. Do I have any legal rights in this matter????
