I have applied to 13 federal police officer jobs last month and i keep get the same response back, why? It say " Due to the number of applications received for this position, we did not reach your application in the final review process. " I have 2 bachelors degrees and have 5 years experience as a police officer. I keep receiving letters from federal emplyment agencies stating "Due to the number of applications received for this position, we did not reach your application in the final review process" or "You were rated eligible but your rating was not within reach for referral to the employing agency". I was wondering how would I go about getting hired with federal employment. I always apply to jobs on usajobs but, I always receive this message. Will seeking help from a mental health professional make me unable to get a job in my field? I'm getting ready to graduate college with a 4yr degree in Criminology. ADVERTISEMENT But these days many don't get too far. Central Americans without documents now face increased security within Mexico, including checks on the train for stowaways. It's also harder for them to head north once they cross into Mexico because of hurricane damage to the train tracks. The result: The number of non-Mexican migrants stopped by the U.S. Border Patrol has dropped almost 60 percent from 2005, despite increased detention efforts. About 68,000 non-Mexican migrants — mostly Central Americans — were detained last year, compared to 165,000 in 2005. Non-Mexicans make up about 10 percent of all migrants caught by Border Patrol officers. Mexico itself is also seeing fewer illegal immigrants — 120,000 were arrested last year, a 50 percent drop from 2005, when Hurricane Stan hit and destroyed the railroad, according to the National Immigration Institute. Since President Felipe Calderon took office two years ago, Mexico has added more soldiers and federal police on its border with Guatemala and more immigration and military checkpoints throughout the south. Juan Gabriel Ramos, a Guatemalan 17-year-old trying to join his mother in California, said he bribed a Mexican federal police officer and an immigration agent before even making it to Arriaga. "They both told me that if I didn't give them money they would send me back to Guatemala," Ramos said. When they're caught, migrants say they're often abused by Mexican authorities. In one notorious case last year in the northern city of Saltillo, migrants complained to the National Human Rights Commission of rectal exams done by immigration officials who said they were checking for cholera. "The mistreatment of migrants here is brutal, and no one does anything about it because everyone sees them as booty," said Heyman Vasquez, a Roman Catholic priest. How should I handle Police Harrassment? I inadvertantly involved myself with a lucrative job offer. After a moment, I became suspicious of it and decided to report it to the FBI. So I headed down to 26 Federal Plaza before I went to work as a bartender. As a bartender, I always carry a corkscrew, bottle opener, and pen when I work. The inspecting officer at the entrance said that I can't bring the corkscrew into the building and either have to take it out or lose it. I surrender the corkscrew and go about my business. I needed to step out of the building to make a copy and went out the same door. I saw my corkscrew and asked if I can have it back since they haven't trashed it yet. They refused in a rude manner and I went about my business. Upon return, I notice another inspector playing with my corkscrew, so I ask if there's any way I can get it back. He again rudely says no, so I ask for his supervisor who has the same response. What happens next is the harrassment. Out ofcharacters; additional details to follow. So I turn around to walk and say "That was a Dickhead Move" to myself. Another officer blocked my exit and I was then detained. The reason was because I apparently called him a "Dickhead". This is inaccurate because I called his actions and the fact that I lost my corkscrew a "Dickhead Move" and not any particular person. However, I am now. Both the officer addressing my complaint and the one that blocked my exit along with two other in the room I had to enter started to berate. One of them ran a make on my license while the others tried to scare with me threats of exposing any warrants or immigration problems I may (which I don't) have. Shortly, I choose to remain silent as they ask me other questions of employment and residence. They had my license and I verbally gave them my social security number. After numerous threats of sending me to the tenth floor (I assuming it's for arrests), I was issue a $100 summons...Out of characters; additional details to follow. under 41CFR102-74.390 with the desciption "Nusance" [SIC] for apparently calling this guy a bad name, which I didn't. Even if I had, that still doesn't warrant those actions taken. I am prior military with training to become an officer, so I know a thing or two about a uniformed profession. I understood that I had certain responsiblities associated with the office and granted powers to properly exercise that office and fulfill my obligations. That being said, I was also granted those powers because I am resposible enough not to abuse them for frivolous or personal gain. Such is true for the member of the Federal Protective Service that harrass and issued me a summons. Therefore, he has violated my rights and abused his powers because he thought I call him a bad name. To clarify, I brought the corkscrew (which is not sharp) as both a matter of habit and also because I was headed to work afterwards. I didn't know how long I was going to be there; therfore, I wasn't taken the hour long train ride home and then back to work. No, I do not carry those items when I am not working. How thorough are entry-level federal government employee background checks? When I was 19 years old, I got into an alcohol-related fight at my college. As a result of this incident, I was arrested, fingerprinted, spent a night in jail, and charged with "minor in possession" and "assault and battery" (a felony). When I went to court, the charges were suspended, so they would be dismissed as long as I didn't get into any further trouble, which fortunately I didn't. Now, six years later, I've finished my education and am considering applying for entry-level government jobs as an economic analyst in Washington, D.C. Although my state and federal criminal records are clear, I'm still concerned that my youthful indiscretion will show up when I apply for government jobs, since I was fingerprinted and arrested (the police report never goes away). I think this would pose no problem for jobs in the private-sector, since my criminal records are clear. But are government background checks more thorough, and so it might pose more of a problem? Federal police agency goes overboard and terrorizes kids? I read a recent story(in an L.A.-area newspaper) about a group of schoolkids from California who were on a tour of the White House grounds, but they didn't expect the Presidential limo to drive up in front of them and stop, but then the Secret Service agents suddenly got VERY angry, pulled out their Uzis(or whatever they use now) and pointed them at the now-terrorized kids and yelled repeatedly:"GET BACK OR ELSE ALL OF YOU WILL BE SHOT AND KILLED!!!"... The kids(and their parental chaperones) weren't even approaching the limo, and now they're screaminig and crying as the agents went further in their "terror campaign"...physically(one parent said "violently") escorting the kids away from the parking area at gunpoint! Now the kids and parents have said that they will NEVER visit Washington(DC) ever again due to the agents' handling of the situation...and they're too afraid to ask for an apology due to the continued threats by the agents afterwards... Sure, the agents have a more serious job to do(now that Obama's in office), but to make "terrorist threats" upon a group of defenseless elementary-grade-schoolers is, IMO, going too far... Why does the federal government have an age limit on law enforcement when state governments do not? Federal law enforcement positions have a mandatory retirement age of 60 and you must work 20 years in order to retire. I am wondering why do they think the federal law enforcement positions are so much harder than being a local police officer or sheriff? Write to your city government and urge it to provide full funding for citizen review of police officers accused of human rights violations. If your city, county, or town does not have citizen review of your police, call for the creation of an effective civilian review unit. Police officials should do a better job at holding officers accountable if there is community pressure and knowledge about police investigations and disciplinary actions. Write to your city government and urge it to require your police department to create and utilize "early warning" or "at-risk" systems to identify officers who are the subjects of repeated complaints or civil lawsuits alleging misconduct. A small percentage of officers often taint an entire police force because police superiors do not act to hold them accountable by supervising, disciplining, or dismissing them when appropriate. An effective early warning system could make a difference. Write to your state legislators and governor urging the creating of a special prosecutor's office to handle the investigation and prosecution of police officers accused of brutality or corruption. ADVERTISEMENT Even as Mexico presses the United States to grant unrestricted citizenship to millions of undocumented Mexican migrants, its officials at times calling U.S. policies "xenophobic," Mexico places daunting limitations on anyone born outside its territory. In the United States, only two posts — the presidency and vice presidency — are reserved for the native born. In Mexico, non-natives are banned from those and thousands of other jobs, even if they are legal, naturalized citizens. Foreign-born Mexicans can't hold seats in either house of the congress. Is it possible to go into the Army Reserve as an Officer and get a job with a Federal Agency at the same time? I'm about to contract with ROTC very very soon (in a matter of days) and my major is Criminology. I was greatly considering a Full Active Duty as Military Police, then applying for the FBI when my contract with the Army comes to a close. However, I can't seem to decide which contract I want with ROTC: Full Active or Reserve. My real question is: is it possible to go Army Reserves and get a job with a Federal Agency, such as the FBI even though I am committed to the Reserves? If not, what other good careers are there for me with a Criminology Degree while being in the Army Reserves as an Officer? Would my chances be lower of getting into a Federal Agency (such as the FBI) if I am in the Army Reserves as a Lieutenant and "fresh" out of college than doing 5 years in Active Duty as an MP and then applying?

What career is best to choose, I have a dilemma ? I have a clerical job know that has no opportunity for growth,the wages are very low, and there is ongoing office drama. I have a school age child and I am searching for an occupation that will allow flexibility with my child. I do not work weekends,nights or holidays. I think I do not have alot of options for flexible careers at this point without going back to college. I have a degreee in communications and I maxed out students loans while trying to obtain a teacher certification. Know I am default on the loans. I would like to apply for a federal job (fbi), but I am default on my loans. I have considered becoming a police. The job pays well and I am interested in that type of work, the only problem is the work hours. My husband is a truck driver, so his hours are irregular. One good thing is a police officer can bid only by senority after probation, with no gurantees for good hours.

If i recieved a subpeona in Ar for a federal court case in NM, over 700 miles away, do i have to go? I am new at this, so not quite sure how it goes. Why do you blame (read below before you answer) the employer? As an employer, I am legaly bound to verify a persons identity, social security number and work status (resident alien, green card, citizen). So, when I hire someone I ask for all of the documents to verify their status. I copy them all and put them in their job file. Many of these documents are bogus. How did they get them you ask? It is very easy. To prove my point, I went to Santa Ana, CA and found several open air stalls selling false ID and SS cards. Cheap too. $50 US. I called the local police and notified them of what was going on. They told me it was a federal issue. I called the FBI and was told is was an immigration issue. I called INS and was told that there were so many places like this that they would take a report but no other action would be taken. So, my point is, why blame the employer, when he has no way of doing the job the federal, state and local authorities should be doing? I would like to add that I am far from unique in the way I screen employees. I know many other small companies that do the same. Couple questions about becoming a Military Police officer? Yesterday me and 4 of my friends had a Army recruiter come over to talk and answer our questions about the Army. Anyways I told him that I was interested in becoming an MP if I joined so I could work as a civilian police officer or as a federal agent for with the FBI, DEA, ATF, ect... He then explained to me that as a MP I would have a very high chance being sent to Iraq and I would have to get a score of 40 or more on the ASVAB test. After that we all took practice test which he said is a pretty good indicator of what I would score on the real test, anyways I scored a 64. Then he explained that only the Army gives you a contract that guarantees you the job you want in the military and that the other branches don't give any guarantee like the Army. Also he told me that I could enlist to be an MP that just guards the prisons and I wouldn't have to go off base or I might even get stationed at Gitmo. Basically I want to know if the stuff he was telling was true.

What criminal history information is available if the Target Corporation ran a background employment check? I know there are federal and state laws governing this issue. How do I get my money back from police after I was proven innocent? I was at my boyfriends house on my birthday and had brought all my birthday cards with money in them, some not opened yet. To make a long story short.. cops came in without warrent, we were charged for pot plants and making counterfit money(counter fit money is federal, so is taken over by the RCMP so it had nothing to do with the birthday money). I was proven innocent of all charges(except for counterfit, which I havent gone to court for yet) and the police never gave me a receipt for the money, but it was written in their statement of property taken. Around $950 was taken, not including another $850 that I had just taken out of my bank account for rent and have proof of. How do you get police and environmental agencies to do their job when you have a video that documents dumping? We have surveillance video that shows a so-called environmental clean-up company discharging waste that they removed from another site onto our property. We called the state environmental authority and they said they have so much dumping that they can't investigate unless you can actually see it on the ground. We called the county sheriff's office and they said they have to depend on the experts at the state to take care of stuff like this. The waste is condensate water that was pumped out of the bottom of fuel tanks at a truck stop. The dumper was a state-licensed company that dumped into a creek that runs across our property. How can I save my credit after mail theft (TWICE!)? Over the last almost two years now we had our mail stolen twice. It has been a full time job trying tog et my identity back, fight or pay for late fees, gets ultilies turned back on, etc. and my credit seems irrepairably damaged. I have police reports and dispostion reports from the local and federal Governments (The first time it was stolen by postal employees) and other "official" papers but many creditors and other business establishments don't seem to believe this has happened. (I understand that it SOUNDS like a lie that stuff would be stolen twice within such a short period of time). Police found Sadler's cockatiel, Aussie, cowering in a corner with a broken wing. The bird later died at an emergency clinic. A glass panel from a grandfather clock was shattered. A mirror in the front foyer was cracked, and glass spilled out onto the floor. Nearby, police found Sadler, 74, dead, her beaten and bloody body by a rear sliding-glass door inside the home. "It was one hell of a fight," her grandson-in-law, Paul Woods, said Tuesday as he helped clean debris from the living room. "I think she did a good job for being 74 years old and trying to defend herself." According to Metro police, the man who on Monday killed Sadler, and perhaps Sadler's bird, was Ivan Moreno, 30, a next-door neighbor. Moreno, who is thought to be an illegal immigrant from Mexico, admitted to police that he struck Sadler after he went to her house to get money, said Metro police spokesman Don Aaron. Moreno was arrested yesterday on a charge of criminal homicide. He also faces two charges of assaulting police officers during his arrest and a domestic assault charge after threatening his wife in Spanish that he would kill her if she cooperated with authorities, police said. Moreno's possible illegal presence in the country was a sore spot yesterday for Sadler's family and neighbors. They expressed contempt for landlords who rented a duplex to Moreno and his family. Police initially said Sadler had been beaten to death, but an autopsy yesterday found that she had also been strangled, Aaron said. Oklahoma's Governor Brad Henry has signed a sweeping immigration Reform bill: House Bill 1804, that its sponsor believes will go a long way in dealing with the illegal alien problem in the state. House Bill 1804 was passed by overwhelming majorities in both the House and Senate of the Oklahoma Legislature. The measure's sponsor, State Representative Randy Terrill, says the bill has four main topical areas: it deals with identity theft; it terminates public assistance benefits to illegals; it empowers stat e and local police to enforce federal immigration laws; and it punishes employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens. Oklahoma is no longer "O.K." for illegal aliens, Terrill observes. "When you put everything together in context," he contends, "the bottom line is illegal aliens will not come here if there are no jobs waiting for them, they will not stay here if there is no government subsidy, and they certainly won't stay here if they know that if they ever encounter our state and local law enforcement officers, they will be physically detained until they're deported. And that's exactly what House Bill 1804 does." The Oklahoma legislator is pleased the bill he sponsored into law was signed by Governor Henry and believes it will go a long way to curb the illegal immigration problem in the state. "I would remind people that states are separate sovereigns in our federal system," Terrill points out. "Anyone who doesn't understand that needs to go back and take an American federal government class in college," he says. A new kind of politics? http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-0704060020apr06,1,1855420.story?coll=chi-news-hed&?track=sto-topstory MEXICANS IN CHICAGO: A NEW KIND OF POLITICS Influence on both sides of the border Activists' political power is rising in Chicago and their homeland, as they seek reforms through marches and money Advertisement By Antonio Olivo and Oscar Avila Tribune staff reporters April 6, 2007 To outsiders, the men and women gathered inside a sleepy West Side restaurant may have seemed unlikely power brokers: a janitor, a real estate agent and others hardly known outside their circuit of neighborhood dances and back-yard barbecues. Jose Luis Gutierrez, who plotted strategy with the group as a soccer match flickered on a nearby TV, was himself a wholesale grocer until last year. But Gutierrez is now a top aide to Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and he was joined at the table by leaders of Chicago-area Mexican immigrant clubs, the engines behind a new political movement that is making itself felt from Illinois to Michoacan. Gutierrez received smiling nods when he likened the political muscle of the region's 563,000 Mexican immigrants to the power of Irish-Americans in the 19th and 20th Centuries, who came to control the Chicago machine. In May, the strength of Mexicans will be on display when many of the region's 300 immigrant clubs -- known as "hometown associations" -- will help organize a march in downtown Chicago a year after their political coming-out party, demonstrations that flooded the Loop last spring and charged the national immigration debate. For decades Mexican hometown associations have functioned as social networks whose members pooled their money earned here to help build new schools or churches back in Mexico. But leaders in Chicago's largest immigrant group have a more ambitious worldview than their predecessors, even more than the ethnic blocs that preceded them decades ago. Some, like Gutierrez, wield growing influence in both countries. One morning, he's unveiling a blueprint for more immigrant services in Illinois as director of the state's Office of New Americans Policy and Advocacy. The next night, he's brainstorming with activists in his home state of Michoacan about a slate of candidates for Mexico's congress. An active role in Mexican politics might seem at odds with building political influence here. But Gutierrez and others say they form a budding new political consciousness among Mexican immigrants -- a "third nation" of sorts that transcends the border, advancing the community's cause on both sides. "The nation-state concept is changing," said Gutierrez, 46, who came to Chicago in 1986 and led one of the Midwest's largest federations of hometown associations. "You don't have to say, `I am Mexican,' or, `I am American.' You can be a good Mexican citizen and a good American citizen and not have that be a conflict of interest. Sovereignty is flexible." That concept worries some U.S. officials and scholars who see the dual loyalty as undermining the assimilation of Mexican immigrants. Irish, German and Polish immigrants eventually melded into Chicago's landscape, their ties to their native soil largely sentimental. But Mexican immigrants today are linked to their homeland like no group before, scholars say, connected by NAFTA, satellite TV, the Internet, cell phones and cheap non-stop flights. In Mexico, their power stems from the nearly $25 billion these immigrants send home every year, the country's second-highest source of income behind oil. Their political influence surfaces in places like Teloloapan, far up in the cactus-filled hills of the state of Guerrero, where a Chicago restaurateur helped build new roads and business. Grateful townspeople elected him mayor in a landslide. In the U.S., immigrants' power is driven by numbers and a growing deftness at the levers of this country's political machinery. That recently manifested itself in a fledgling political action committee called Mexicans for Political Progress, which raised $23,000 for Blagojevich's re-election and rallied volunteers to walk precincts during November's election. An unfolding movement Fabian Morales, a soft-spoken Realtor with a well-clipped mustache, stands at the center of the unfolding movement. He handled logistics for three massive immigration marches in Chicago last year -- including a four-day walk to suburban Batavia -- and co-founded Mexicans for Political Progress. After coming to Chicago in 1970, Morales helped launch one of the city's then-few hometown clubs, devoted to his tiny native village of Xonacatla, Guerrero. Back then, Xonacatla was without roads, potable water or electricity. It was a slow journey from other towns by foot or horseback, Morales said. The club members in Chicago resolved to change that. Collecting $50 to $100 at a time, Morales and others raised enough through barbecues and door-to-door soliciting to replace a house used for worship services with a towering marble church that rises from the green hillside. Morales has since helped develop CONFEMEX, an umbrella organization for most of the hometown clubs in the Midwest. Among other things, the group is a central voice in economic development in Mexico, representing an estimated $340 million in projects generated by U.S.-based hometown associations in the last five years, according to Mexican federal officials. "We want to focus on creating more jobs there so they don't have to think about emigrating," Morales said. The rising activity of hometown associations caught the eye of the Mexican government, which eventually created a "3-for-1" matching project, where federal, state and local governments split the cost of a new bridge or computer center with the U.S.-based groups. Those projects have given Mexican immigrants "a great moral authority" in their homeland, as well as political cachet, said Carlos Gonzalez, executive director of the Institute for Mexicans in the Exterior, or IME, a Mexican federal government agency that fosters stronger ties with expatriates. "During the 1970s, [Mexicans] called the people who left Mexico and acclimated to the U.S. 'pocho,' which, if you look in the dictionary, means 'spoiled fruit,' " Gonzalez said. "The change we've seen in the public perception of Mexicans in the exterior has been 180 degrees." In 2006, citizens abroad were allowed to vote in Mexican presidential elections for the first time. Leaders are also pushing for changes that would allow expatriates to vote in local elections and even hold elective offices while residing abroad. Recently, Gutierrez and others persuaded Michoacan to become the first state in Mexico to extend voting rights to expatriates. Their rationale: Almost half of those born in Michoacan, Zacatecas and several other Mexican states now live in the U.S. Timoteo "Alex" Manjarrez, 44, is among a small but growing number of Mexican immigrants making a bolder claim in their motherland. Arriving from his native town of Teloloapan, Guerrero, in 1980, Manjarrez spent 19 years in Chicago. The stocky, boyish-looking immigrant worked for years as a dishwasher at the Columbia Yacht Club and, eventually, became owner of three Mexican restaurants in the city. Fulfilling a desire shared by many immigrants, Manjarrez moved back to his native town in 1999 with enough money for his family to live comfortably. But the place he had longed for all those years was still frustratingly poor, despite the investments Manjarrez's hometown club made in new roads and other improvements. Manjarrez, who holds both Mexican and U.S. citizenship, settled in and quickly built a new health club and a hacienda-style restaurant named La Condesa, after the three he still owns in Chicago. In 2004, he ran for mayor of Teloloapan. With long-distance backing from his hometown club friends in Chicago, who sent money and telephoned friends and local officials on his behalf, Manjarrez won handily. 'The city that works' Since taking office, the man who sees Mayor Richard M. Daley as a political role model has pushed to remake Teloloapan into a Mexican version of "the city that works." The effort includes newly paved streets, a recreation center that replaces a local swamp known as "black waters," and a towering hotel being built privately by Manjarrez's family. Next to a new medical clinic, a donated Chicago ambulance sits in the parking lot. Its emblem has been painted over, but it serves as a reminder of the continued links Manjarrez has to his former city, where he maintains a home near Midway Airport, votes in U.S. elections and checks in on his businesses. Aurelio Santamaria Bahena, mayor of a town near Manjarrez's called Tlapehuala, labeled such changes "a blessing" for an area of Mexico dominated by crumbling lean-to houses and children in bare feet pulling bone-thin donkeys. But, as with other parts of the country where the immigrant handprint is deepening, the introduction of U.S.-style governance has also bred resentment. Local leaders of Manjarrez's own Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) are trying to drum him out of office, arguing he is too brash and condescending. The mayor counters the fight is about his efforts to take away "a plate of corruption that they've been able to eat from for years." The conflict was an uncomfortable backdrop during a recent PRD strategy meeting at a restaurant in Chilpancingo, Guerrero's capital. Headlines that morning featured a march against Manjarrez, orchestrated by his opponents. "People see you as an outsider," a worried Santamaria cautioned Manjarrez. "People don't think you see things as they are here." Manjarrez, wearing a black "La Condesa" windbreaker, patted his friend on the back and smiled. He had a media plan, one that might have made Daley proud. "We'll publish photos of the streets of Teloloapan before and after I came into office," Manjarrez said. "And, we'll ask the people: `Which would you prefer?' " That same week, Mexican immigrants from the U.S. and Canada met in Mexico City, as members of an advisory council created by the Mexican government. With a brash American style, they soon escalated their advice to demands, the members' voices echoing through the meeting hall. Morales, the Chicago Realtor, and about 100 other council members pushed Mexico to lobby the U.S. harder on immigration reform. They chastised their hosts for not creating more jobs. Buttonholing federal legislators in hallways, they reminded elected officials how much their districts relied on money sent from the U.S. They want 'results now' Gregorio Luke, a blond member of the council from Los Angeles partial to designer suits, observed that this kind of behavior wouldn't exist in a purely Mexican forum, where deference toward authority guides nearly all dialogue. "These people come here speaking Spanish, but they're negotiating as Americans," said Luke, a museum director who once oversaw cultural affairs at the Los Angeles Mexican Consulate. "They want to see results now." The meeting of the advisory council also illustrated the provocative overlap of Mexican and American political action. In addition to all-day strategy sessions on how to improve Mexico, council members brainstormed over late-night drinks on next moves in the fight for U.S. immigration reform. Many members had used their existing e-mail network to coordinate simultaneous demonstrations in Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities. Though not active participants in the U.S. immigrant movement, Mexican officials urged their compatriots to keep on fighting. "Let there be no barriers or walls between Mexicans here on the inside and the outside," former Mexican President Vicente Fox told the group, referring to a 2006 U.S. law that allows for a 700-mile fence to be built at the border. The audience stood and cheered. The idea that the Mexican government might be helping its nationals shape U.S. politics has raised red flags, both in the halls of academia and in the more volatile world of talk radio and the Internet. Robert Leiken, director of the immigration and national security program at the right-leaning Nixon Center in Washington, argued that binational activism among Mexican immigrants is bad for both countries. In the U.S., the meetings in Spanish and the often-passionate interest in Mexico's future hinder assimilation, he said. In Mexico, the relationship to hometown associations fosters an unhealthy economic dependence on U.S. remittances. "If I went out to Pilsen and spent some time with people from a hometown association, I'd think these are really cool people," Leiken said. But, "Standing back and looking at this from a social policy standpoint, I see some real problems." James McCann, a Purdue University political science professor, found that immigrants interested in Mexican affairs were more likely to participate in U.S. politics. He helped interview about 1,100 Mexican immigrants and found that hometown clubs promoted activism. "The conventional wisdom is that any transnational engagement is going to suck the oxygen out of your civic life in the States," McCann said. "But it seems that if you open a new avenue of expression in Mexico, that new avenue might pay some other dividends in the U.S." Some of those dividends went directly to the Blagojevich campaign last fall, when the governor found himself being serenaded by a trumpet-playing mariachi band inside the Hacienda Tecalitlan restaurant on the Near Northwest Side. Near a trickling courtyard fountain, Morales praised the governor in Spanish at the kickoff dinner for the Mexicans for Political Progress PAC. While Morales once raised money for his hometown with $1 tamales, the price here was as much as $500 a plate. "Let us demonstrate our political power by voting in the election, by voting for our friends interested in the prosperity of Mexicans. Friends like Gov. Rod Blagojevich!" Morales told the crowd. Blagojevich, who speaks a hint of Spanish, took the microphone and shouted: "Viva Chivas!" a reference to a popular Mexican soccer team. When the laughter and applause subsided, he switched to English and added: "By organizing, you are empowering a community. Your voice will be heard." The mood is darker in northwest suburban Carpentersville, where a growing Mexican community has rallied in large numbers in the face of a local backlash against undocumented immigrants. Last fall, about 3,000 Mexican immigrants and their supporters turned up outside Carpentersville's City Hall in an unexpected show of opposition to a proposed ordinance that would penalize landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and employers who hire them. The crowd was so riled a vote on the ordinance was postponed and has yet to be taken. The quick response came largely due to the hometown association representing the village of La Purisima, Michoacan, local activists said. The club turned to its telephone list of 400 families, said Salvador Balleno, the group's president. The turnout was a victory, but it has not deterred Carpentersville trustees from other proposals that would allow local police to trigger deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants and make English the village's official language. And as Balleno has struggled to register voters and rally volunteers for this month's village elections, even sympathetic politicians have seemed hesitant to link themselves too closely with the hometown association. Balleno now fears the village's hard-liners have the upper hand, intimidating some of the immigrants who protested last fall. "The [club] members know that if these people stay [in office] it is going to affect their kids," Balleno said, sounding anxious that an opportunity was slipping through his fingers. Jose Artemio Arreola, a key organizer of next month's march in Chicago, has been actively monitoring the battle in Carpentersville. He sees the activity there as part of a plan to create a political empire for Mexican immigrants, one linking hometown associations in Chicago and other cities to labor unions and Mexico's congress. His strategy includes moving back to his native state of Michoacan to run for congress there, something Arreola never imagined doing when he left a town overrun by poverty and ruled by local drug kingpins. He got his start in Chicago working in a plastics factory. Frustrated by the union representation there, he ran for shop steward and won. Unable to speak English, he relied on his bilingual co-workers to help him negotiate union contracts. He has since become a school janitor in Oak Park. The position pays little, but it has allowed Arreola to climb the ranks of the Service Employees International Union, where he has become key in that union's national efforts to tap further into the country's exploding Mexican immigrant workforce. All the while, Arreola has used the sharp elbows and old-school union tactics acquired in Chicago to become a power broker in his hometown of Acuitzio del Canje. He started in 2004 when the local mayor refused to back projects proposed by his hometown association. Arreola, a burly backslapper partial to gold neck chains, recalled thinking: "I need to take them out." He recruited a teacher to run for mayor in the Mexican town. Arreola then brought back a town phone book and, with others in Chicago, called voters one by one, promising a stream of U.S. investment if his candidate won. The incumbent opted for traditional rallies and car tours through town with a bullhorn. More than two years later, sitting in a Pilsen restaurant, Arreola opened a laptop computer and showed off the fruits of what proved to be an easy victory. Pictures of a new retirement home popped onto the screen, one featuring a grinning Arreola at a groundbreaking ceremony. Another showed a new computer lab with 40 computers for local schoolchildren, an investment in the future of Acuitzio del Canje. The town's name comes from an 1865 decision to make it the site for a "canje," or exchange of prisoners between warring Mexican and French troops. "She said she communicated with James Hunter on a teenage internet chatroom," he added. "After three to four weeks they exchanged mobile numbers. She told him she was 14 and at school, and he told her he was a 45-year-old engineer who lived on Teesside." Hunter admitted to causing a child to look at a sex act, sexual activity with a child, and 15 charges of making indecent photographs and videos of a child between January 2005 and August, last year. Mitigating, Paul Currer said: "He fully accepts responsibility for the terrible consequences of his actions. "It's a matter of his deepest regret that he has had a devastating effect upon the young girl's life, and not only her life, but the life of her family." Hunter was jailed for 30 months. Mother says police harassed them. Plainfield Township's police chief covered up the fact that one of his officers molested a teenager, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court. The suit says Plainfield police frequently showed up at the victim's house to intimidate, threaten and harass the victim and her mother after she asked Chief Dean Ceraul to investigate Officer Christopher Young. Young was sentenced Friday to 10 to 36 months in state prison for molesting the victim, who is 16 now and was 14 at the time of the abuse. The victim and her mother lived in Pen Argyl at the time of the molestation but now live in Palmer Township, the suit says. The suit, filed Sunday, says Ceraul accepted Young's denial of the crime despite repeated pleas by the mother for an investigation. Police followed the mother, pulled her over and parked outside her house for no reason, the suit says. Marine Infantry transition to civilian life? I am currently in my second year of college and have always had a strong desire to enlist in the Marines. Originally wanting to enlist straight out of high school, I obtained an academic scholarship to a decent university which my family forced me to take as I hadn't yet turned 18. While I scored a fairly decent ASVAB mark, the idea of MCT instead of Infantry school bothered me. The recruiter told me with the new fiscal year and my score, I could have any job I wanted. Repo laws.................? I need to know if a repo agent has the authority to threaten me with the police and at a federal level by claiming the vehicle is stolen ( when it is not in fact ) to get me to return the car. I have researched extensively online about it and there are alot of laws but one says you may not threaten a debtor with police or act as a police agent when you are not. I know that I read this but I was thinking of suing the company who employs this repo agent because he caused me to lose my job today and the people who I took the car to return it to told me he could not have me arrested and could not claim the vehicle was stolen. I just wanted to add to this situation that when I went to return the vehicle with the agreement with the repo agent (a voluntary return) that I ended up at the dealership (which sell the same car type) for 4 hours and lost my job and in the end the folks at nissan told me that the agent cannot report it as stolen, that they have no responsibility for the car on their lot, and that I won't get arrested for not paying on the car. The most he said could happen is that the car get's repossessed when I am not around but I can take the car back with me. So basically I still have the car in my possession and that is that. I just wanted to know more information from people on here who have experience with laws about it or know from research from things I don't know yet. HELP should I move since I have been robbed? my husband and i own a house is southern california where there are lots of illegals loitering all day. unfortunately, not all of them find jobs. two of them tried to enter my home when i was painting (i had left the door open because of fumes) thankfully my dogs gave me warning and they took off. i called the cops but they were already long gone. before this happened my husbands car was broken into and just yesterday my car was broken into and they took my id plus 2 dollars. the police claim this is a federal issue and they will not do anything about the hundreds of illegals loitering. i feel the problem will continue to esculate. but a part of me does not want to sell the house the other half of me says get out! if we do move it will cost a lot of money in gas because we cannot afford to live in this area and must commute. Should I say something? I was contacted by my hometowns police department as an offer to apply for 2 open positions. I am already a police officer for the Federal Gov't, but I thought it would be nice to go back where I grew up. I looked at it like either way I am still a cop, so it wouldn't be a loss. I filled out the application, added the necessary paperwork from trasnscripts, to commendations, to letters of reference etc. I knew and was told going in I was the highest qualified candidate. After all was said and done I was not offered a position. I looked into it and asked around as to why. I had my degree with a 3.89 GPA, I'm academy trained, I've been on the job for 2 years now with the Gov't, I was the only certified EMT, etc. Out of the 2 that were hired, 1 had a degree w/ no experience and the other was a reserve deputy w/o a degree. I have no real proof or anything that there was nepotism or someone did a favor. However, my hometown is noutorious for that sort of thing. I am very happy where I am. I just feel like I should say something. A lawsuit seems a little far fetched at this time. If I wasn't already on the job, then it would be happening. I am tempted to write a few letters to some newspapers. Funny thing is I also found out one of those hired, DUI as a teen and a plea deal of 6 months probation for an assault case. I have not even had a parking ticket. It's just a load of BS, I am better off in the long run, it just would have been nice to go home. I called them and all I get is the "We picked who we thought would be best for the department" generic answer. Sorry to have bothered you all with this question, it just irked me enough that I had to get some more opinions that weren't my angry biased family and friends. Police were called to the home on Senisa Street after they received a tip about stolen cars. When they arrived, they saw four people running from the house. They looked inside the "stash house" and found 51 illegal immigrants - 38 men, 12 women and a teenage girl â€“ all crammed into three bedrooms. â€œThis is a case where we obviously just can't walk away,â€ Sgt. Gabe Trevino with San Antonio Police said. â€œWe called the federal government to come out here and do their job.â€ Trevino said two men escaped while police confirmed that two cars in the back of the house were stolen. i am trying to obtain a career in law enforcement. will an entry level separation hold me up? the ELS was from the marine corps. it was 8 years ago and was for failure to disclose prior service marijuana use. i failed the uranlysis and was sent home with eligibility to re-enlist in two years. i also have a summary offense ticket from that same year. since then i have enrolled in a municipal police academy(one at your own expense with no guaranteed job afterwards, you only receive cert. to become a police officer if hired), been employed as a correctional officer, an armed security officer subcontracted by federal government, and held numerous other armed security jobs and certifications/liscensures. i have also avoided any kind of trouble since 2000, not even traffic tickets. i am just wondering what kind of chance i have in succeding. i am looking for awensers from police officers but mainly background investigators who may come across this question.
