Federal Employment Resume Knowledge Base

Is there any assistance for a qualified person to get a Federal job? In this present economy most job applications are submitted online. With this being the case if someone is interested in Federal employment without some assistance the resume could end up in a black hole. Like all industries there is the proper terminology for the resume that an outsider like myself is not aware of. I know I am not alone in this mystery and many agencies say they can help but of course there is a fee. Being presently unemployed finances are limited. Any assistance would be appreciated.I would share this information with others and assist in their job search.
What is the best resume structure? I am a seasoned job seeker looking for Federal employment. I wanted to know what is the best type of resume to use. Should I use the bullet or paragraph style for structuring my resume? What is the most popular style?
i am filling out a resume need background check to remember employment? i cant remember the exact dates of my past employment and i am filling out an application but i don't want to put down the wrong dates because i know federal agencies check. does anyone know an easy way to find this info?
Those of you with federal government jobs: How long did the hiring process take? The federal government is notorious for having a very long and drawn out hiring process. It isn't uncommon for a person to apply for a job in January and not hear anything until May or June. After submitting a resume through USAjobs, filling out the occupational questionnaire, making the selection list and participating in a second interview how long does it usually take after this interview for the government to reach a hiring decision? Would you share some of the experiences you have had with federal government employment? I'm specifically concerned about FCIP (federal career intern position) programs
Would you hire me in Richmond, Virginia? I am a recent college graduate who is looking for a job. My degree is in English. As a liberal arts major one can think of me as "a jack of all trades" therefore I have a strong interest in: Technical Writing/Editing Public Relations Marketing Community Development Education Hotel/Restaurant Management Federal Employment My resume can be viewed here: http://brobertson.emurse.com/ It would be most appreciated if anyone in the Richmond Virginia area knew of any employers willing to take me under their wing, give me a chance and allow me to use my many skills for the needs of the company. Good internships? Good career search engines? Job Fairs? Any ideas? (Also, no cold calling, selling insurance, online employment, work at home or door to door commission type jobs. I'm unemployed but not desperate. Thanks!)
Job application process with the state of Maryland? With a Maryland State Agency, it says: Analysts in our Recruitment and Selection Division review and rate candidates. In the majority of situations, the reviews are performed on the information already provided in the application/MS100, requiring no additional effort on the part of applicants. Based on objective factors determined by our health program directors and managers, applicants are rated in a “band scoring” process as Best Qualified, Better Qualified and Qualified. Now, does this mean they require ONLY state employment application, MS100? Do they not want resume and cover letter with MS100? If they want resume, can it be in private sector format or does it have to be length like federal resume? Anyone know? Thanks. Is there anyone employed by state of Maryland who knows? It's difficult for me to call State HR during my work hours. That's why I am asking this on Yahoo and hoping to get an answer.
I need to create a resume for an Administrative Assistant position, do you know who I could network with? As of 18 August 2006, my temporary employment of six months at the Veterans Medical Center came to an end. The Administrative Assistant position was not a federal position; instead, I was discharged from the hospital, also, I was schedule to see a Social Worker who, in turn, referred me to a Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) Program at the hospital. I need to create a resume for an Administrative Assistant position; my doctor limited me to this type of work . Because of the x-ray test & the MRI; the hospital images revealed; I had what's known as a "Degenerative Disc Disease; Arthritis in both of my knees; and space decrease in my Left Knee. However, I don't feel I'm as worst off, as others who may sincerely need Social Security Disability/Social Security. In conclusion, I prefer employment until I'm no longer able to work; this is why I need to network with a company, on the internet, that specializes in Resumes' to be sure I submit my resume, properly. Thank you, cjr

Revamping my resume...? I'm not job hunting. I'm just doing a current resume that MIGHT land me a part time job in early intervention services, though. My main full time experience has been teaching (almost 4 years and nearly a year as an administrative assistant). I'm young and I have had plenty of other jobs.Should I leave out the following positions I've had: Summer employment at a large, international law firm (2 summers in a row) Federal government agency internship (undergrad) C-SPAN internship in college (undergrad) Teaching Assistant for the Political Science dept (undergrad) Temp jobs as receptionist, legal assistant, and admin assistant (after college) Worked in the university's computer lab also (undergrad) Or would you include them? I can't put everything because my resume would never end. Some of these jobs were short term and go back to early 2000s. *Many of these jobs have government/law themes. I'm no longer involved in that sector.

Job History Question? Hi. I was curious to know if there was a federal site (or something like that) where I can look up all of my prior employers? Its been a long time since I worked outside my home. I have been a stay at home mom for most of the last 12 years. Now that my girls are getting older I would like to find employment but not sure if I qualify for ANYTHING anymore. I cant seem to remember some of the dates and prior employers that I had, and don't want to try and create a resume with the wrong information. Please Help. Thank you so much for your time..

Can anyone help me find a job in the Seattle/Tacoma/Bellevue area? Resume and story attached. Anyone? Ok... I have moved around a little over the past few years. I lived in Florida for about 6 1/2 years. I did move to Montana for a year to take care of my mother after a near-fatal accident. I moved back to FL, then my spouse's job took us to Portland, OR in March, 2008. Unfortunately, after our cross-country move, the company had layoffs and we couldn't survive on my salary alone in Portland. We are regrouping in Lafayette, LA where we have family and a much more affordable lifestyle. Both of us dislike it here very much, and miss the Northwest like crazy. We are looking at the Seattle area instead of Portland because the economy in Seattle is more sound. Resume below. I did not list my name, address or phone number for privacy reasons. If you would like to contact me, please reply to this question. Vets - Suggestions for finding a job after military life? If you are a Vet looking for a job there are several websites. Let’s start here. You need to prepare a perfect resume and you need to research how to do this. Gone are the days of the one pagers. Don’t be redundant, but write about each of your jobs and your accomplishments. As you read about a job description, tailor your resume and use the buzzwords when describing your past employment. Now, go to Military.com. They will help you research writing your resume. You can also search for jobs in the private and federal sectors. Federal jobs can also be found on USAJobs.gov. Monster.com also helps your write resumes and look for jobs. Why are federal jobs good other than the great pay, advancement, benefits and retirement? As a Vet you are eligible for preferential hiring. State in your cover letter you are eligible under the Veteran’s Readjustment Act. (Research the VRA because you have to have served under certain conditions.) You also receive extra hiring points. If the position requires a degree, you are exempt under the VRA. Stay in the Reserve and earn a second retirement. As a federal employee you can take time off for drills, AT, and deployments without fear of reprisals from your employer – which is unlawful, but happens. You can also pay a percentage of your military time towards your federal retirement. Get hired as a Vet with 10 years active duty and you will have 11 years service after your first year on the job. That will really boost your retirement and cost very little. Usually 7% of your base pay per year you want credited. Employers really like Vets. Don’t forget to describe your leadership and accomplishments in your resume. There are also civilian contractor positions overseas that pay a lot, but have little career potential. Remember, always do your homework. Research resumes, job hunting, as well as the company and position you are applying for. Good luck and thank you for serving your country. Any other suggestions to share?
Health Care Jobs Reserved for Minorities? Will the eventual takeover of our health care system result in exclusion of white workers as it has in Canada? Can we trust our Government to act fairly and not exclude whites based on their race? OTTAWA - A stay-at-home mother trying to re-enter the workforce after nine years away says she can’t understand why the federal government would stop her from applying for a job simply because she is white. Sara Landriault, a sometime family activist, says that with her kids in school full time she decided to start looking for work outside of the home. While surfing on the federal government job website, Landriault says she found a position at Citizenship and Immigration Canada she felt she was qualified for but was blocked from submitting her resume because she was not an aboriginal or visible minority. “I was flabbergasted,” Landriault said in a telephone interview from her home in Kemptville, Ont., just south of Ottawa. “It was insane. I’m white, so I can’t do it?” Landriault says she has seen job postings in the past that encourage certain groups to apply. “Which is fine, it’s an equal opportunity position,” Landriault said. “But an equal opportunity employer does not stop one race from applying.” A CIC spokeswoman takes a different view. “We are under-represented by aboriginal employees in our work force,” said Melanie Carkner. “At this point in time, the department does meet requirements for visible minorities; however, given the department’s mandate, we make a concerted effort to hire individuals in this group.” The Employment Equity Act, first introduced by the Mulroney government in 1986 and updated by the Chretien government in 1995, allows for certain groups to be favoured when it comes to hiring. The federal government’s policy on employment equity states that the goal is to “ensure that designated group members achieve equitable representation within the public service.” The policy also says that hiring should respect the Charter of Rights and Freedoms which states that “every individual is equal before and under the law,” but also contains a clause allowing for affirmative action programs. Some prominent Conservative MPs, including Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl, have spoken out against this kind of discriminatory hiring practice in the past. In 2005, then public works minister Liberal Scott Brison called his department to task for issuing a memo stating that only certain groups would be hired. "I support the whole policy of inclusion, but I do not support discriminating against any group in hiring practice,” Brison said at the time. http://www.ottawasun.com/news/canada/2010/07/20/14772731.html
Why Is Fox News Sitting On This Story? Subject: US Congress Votes to Outsource Presidency Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2007 22:05:51 -0400 US Congress Votes to Outsource Presidency Washington, DC (AP) -- Congress today announced that the office of the President of the United States of America will be outsourced to India as of November 1, 2007. The move is being made in order to save the President's $500,000 yearly salary, and also a record $521 trillion in deficit expenditures and related overhead the office has incurred during the last 5 years. "We believe this is a wise move financially. The cost savings should be significant," stated Congressman Thomas Reynolds (R-WA). "We cannot expect to remain competitive on the world stage with the current level of cash outlay," Reynolds noted. Mr. Bush was informed by e-mail this morning of his layoff. Preparations for the job move have been underway for some time, and he will have at his disposal the full range of relocation services the Federal Government has to offer. Gurvinder Singh of Indus Teleservices, Mumbai, India will be assuming the office of President as of November 1, 2007. Mr. Singh was born in the United States while his Indian parents were vacationing at Niagara Falls, thus making him eligible for the position. He will receive a salary of $320 (USD) a month but with no health coverage or other benefits. It is believed that Mr. Singh will be able to handle his job responsibilities without a support staff. Due to the time difference between the US and India, he will be working primarily at night, when few offices of the US Government will be open. "Working nights will allow me to keep my day job at the Dell Computer call center," stated Mr. Singh in an exclusive interview. "I am excited about this position. I always hoped I would be President of the U.S.A.” Congressional spokesperson noted that while Mr. Singh may not be fully aware of all the issues involved in the office of President, this should not be a problem as President Bush was not familiar with the issues either. Mr. Singh will rely upon a script algorithm that will enable him to respond effectively to most topics of concern. Using these canned responses, he can address common concerns without having to understand the underlying issue at all. "We know these scripting tools work," stated the spokesperson. "President Bush has used them successfully for years." When asked if Mr. Singh would use the hidden ear plug and radio receiver Mr. Bush used in one of the 2004 televised debates in order to be prompted during more spontaneous question and answer situations, the spokesperson said simply, “You all saw how well that one worked. Absolutely not.” Bush will receive health coverage, expenses, and salary until his final day of employment. Following a two week waiting period, he will be eligible for $140 a week unemployment for 13 weeks. Unfortunately he will not be eligible for Medicaid, as his unemployment benefits will exceed the allowed limit. Mr. Bush has been provided the outplacement services of Manpower, Inc. to help him write a resume and prepare for his upcoming job transition. According to Manpower, Mr. Bush may have difficulties in securing a new position due to limited practical or successful work experience. A Greeter position at Wal-Mart was suggested due to Bush's extensive experience shaking hands. But it is believed he would require laser surgery to remove the smirk. “Wal-Mart can’t afford to have a greeter whose expression basically conveys the sense that he can’t believe these shoppers are actually buying his cheap, plastic, made-in-China junk.” Azawalli and julia j: no, I did not write this myself. It came in an email from a friend about 2 hours ago (so email away, Cheryl M), Jenniferjohnson says it's from The Onion. I can believe it -- sounds just like The Onion. However, I failed to locate it after several search variations. Falconblud, I trust your concern is about the "outsourcing" aspect of the send-up. But your concern that some folks take anything on line as gospel is admirable and, alas, warranted. Jimmy J -- sorry you've already heard the joke. I'm glad Alias Smith & Jones still find this tired old joke funny. I sure did. Spurred on by jenniferjohnson and a strike out at the website of The Onion, I went to Google to see if I could find the original source and author. There are over 100 Google entries for this particular story. The earliest I found was dated 12/1/05. I found one in Spanish dated 6/22/05. And: I found an early version of the story right here on Yahoo Computer Message Boards posted by rumjal on 5/13/05. What's really interesting is the number of variations on this story. You can see that, like many urban folk legends, this story grows and morphs in the hands of the folks who receive it and then pass it on. One can imagine how the legends of Davy Crockett and Billy The Kid came about. In any case, both the original author and some of his/her invisible editors have done a fine job of clever, intelligent writing. My thanks to all.
