When my father was a high-school student in mid-Ohio back in the 50's, there was a year when the mexican migrant workers couldn't get up there to harvest the annual tomato crop. All the American (white in that town) students had to take a week off of school to harvest the tomato crop. That was just for a week...how will we handle this in 2007 if it happens? Would the students still do it for free? Just a thought. I am also against any amnesties. They shouldn't be rewarded for coming here illegally. Illegals have been paying into social security and federal income taxes for years, and never ask for that money back, because they never file tax returns. They use WIC and public assistance, but our government knows that what they use is much less than what we have made off them in commerce, traffic tickets, and unclaimed tax returns. I believe in a guest worker program, only and ONLY if our govt fingerprints every one of the immigrants, then monitors that information. Right now, we have millions here with no identification. They get deported, then come back with a new name. We have to let the police take illegals in and get them deported. Right now, police have no jurisdiction over illegals. After everyone is fingerprinted, if they don't have documentation or fingerprint record, they have to go back home immediately. My husband is a legal resident, and we paid lots of money and used years to get that. LEGALLY. People shouldn't be rewarded for breaking our laws.

Courtney Combs, R-Hamilton. Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones said the bill also is about giving law enforcement more teeth to stop illegal immigrants with fake documents because the United States is where the jobs are. The Ohio Job Preservation Act was announced Thursday, May 14, by the lawmaker and crime fighter during a joint news conference. It would require all public and private employers to check Social Security numbers against the federal government’s free E-Verify system before hiring someone. There are two key parts to the proposed bill, said Jones, a longtime proponent of immigration reform. “One is jobs. The economy is in the toilet and we are losing jobs out of this country,” the sheriff said. Kenny Craig, president and CEO of the Greater Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, said he has not yet seen legislation, but said the chamber encourages members to follow the law. A few questions must be answered before the Middletown area business community can support proposed legislation, said Bill Triick, president and CEO of The Chamber of Commerce serving Middletown, Monroe and Trenton. Those include “specifically what is going to be required of the employer including the amount of time, out-of-pocket costs and if there is a delay period for verification,” he said. Jones said the legislation would make it very costly to knowingly hire illegal immigrants. “Fines will be pretty enormous. Maybe millions, maybe losing their businesses or going to jail,” the sheriff said. “Right now they (business owners) can afford to pay their little fine and go on with business,” he said. Combs said, “We believe this will provide jobs for Americans. We want to curb the foreign lawbreakers who come here to take the jobs. We are after the lawbreakers; if you are here legally we are not after you.” Combs said he plans to introduce the legislation next week. He added people used to say illegal immigrants were doing jobs Americans would not do, but today Americans are standing in line for any job. “We want to help provide jobs that are definitely needed today for legal citizens of the United States.” Combs said. Officer Paul Callahan, Columbus Police Department, which currently has a program with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency for illegal immigrants in central Ohio, joined Jones and Combs for the announcement of the legislation saying, “it is going to keep our towns and cities much safer.” Callahan said often illegal immigrants will return even after deportation with more fake documents because the United States is where the jobs are. “This addresses some of the incentives for these illegal immigrants to come here,” the officer said. Jones noted, “Basically it comes down to why they are here, jobs, jobs, jobs.” Specifics of the proposed Ohio Job Integrity Preservation Act will: — Require public and private employers to register with a federal status verification system, such as E-Verity, to assist with verifying the identity of new employees. Government Grants in Ohio? Hi, I am looking to get some government grants to help me purchase a home... My dad bought some books and info a year ago about all kinds of government grants and stuff like that, but, I really don't know where to start with them.... Supposedly there is a way to get the government to pay for most, if not all of the cost of the house, especially for a first time home buyer... is this true... where would I even begin? How would I go about it... I've been on the www.hud.gov website, but, that is pretty confusing... I am a 21 year old, with a fiancee and a child, I got a steady job, make an ok income... The surveys were conducted by the polling company inc. for the Center for Immigration Studies. In addition to a national survey, detailed polling on immigration was conducted in four contested Senate races: Missouri, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Montana; and in 10 contested House races: Arizona 5th, Connecticut 4th, Indiana 8th, Kentucky 4th, Pennsylvania 6th, Texas 17th, Louisiana 3rd, Georgia 8th, Colorado 7th, and Ohio 6th. How would someone who is temporarily disabled get government assistance without going on unemployment? I have a friend who because of an accident can't return to work for a month. His company does not have short term disability payments. What type of assistance is available to people in that situation without him having to quit his job and go on unemployment. He’s afraid that he won’t have enough money, since he’s not getting a paycheck, to pay for rent, bills and groceries. We live in Ohio if that helps.

Job is what I need here in ohio. Can someone help? I have been unemployed since 08/03/2010 here in Ohio. I have applied at around 200 different places since then. Some of them only accept resumes. I have no life I cannot afford to go out. I cant hang out with friends anymore because im too poor. I have went to the unemployment office but nothing is available. Im so depressed now im thinking of ending my life because of this. Lowering the voting age to 16 years old, will make a change. Every year, politically aware teenagers are deprived the opportunity to vote, when in numerous places the voting age has been lowered, many young people are involved in politics, and they are mentally and emotionally capable. Every year the number of 18 to 24 year olds that vote is increasing by eleven percent. In some places, the lowering of the voting age has been put up as legislation, such as California, Florida, and Massachusetts, and in other places, such as New York, 16 year olds can vote in municipal elections. In European countries such as, Germany and Austria, 16 year olds can vote. Places like Australia, Great Britain, and Canada are considering similar plans. Sixteen year olds are capable both mentally and emotionally to vote. Many 16 year olds have jobs and pay income tax. If they are paying income tax, shouldn’t they have a say in who in the elected person is who makes theses taxes? Furthermore, 16 year olds are allowed to drive, and it is technically legal for them to have sex. For all these laws that are passed, and all the responsibility that is put on them, shouldn’t they have a say in who makes these laws? The testing of teenagers, which may sound like a good idea to some, has already been ruled unconstitutional. People should trust teenagers more. Most teenagers go to school every day, and there they learn about politics, and different types of government. The number young people that vote is increasing every year. According to Campaigns and Elections Magazine, 73 percent of 18 to 24 year olds voted in the 2006 election. Teenagers are a lot brighter than people make them out to be. For those teenagers that do want to vote, and do want to have a say in government, the opportunity should not be denied. Lowering the voting age to 16 would be a very wise move. Politics will have a new influence. The opinions of minds other than most adults will be heard. Sixteen year olds are one hundred percent capable of this task. They are capable emotionally and mentally. They deserve the right to vote, that is given to other people their age, just in different areas of the world. Anyone know what I can do - please help? This is a serious question. I have been dancing (stripping) for 5 years and am now in my 30's and really have had enough of it. I want so much to move forward, yet I have trouble finding a job as I have no background on my resume and certainly no past references I can use. I really need to move forward, yet I do not know where to go next. Let me rephrase that - I know where to go next, I just don't know how to get there. I am in Ohio and if anyone knows of a job counselor or somewhere I can go where I can get a good job where my background is not an issue, please let me know. my mothers house? well......... my moms house is falling apart. First of all, the roof is completely useless anymore,who knows how old it is, all i know is it does not do it's job,no gutters. No insulation except for a few walls in the house which you can only see because of the holes in the walls. It is a good promotion and brings with it more money and more freedom. So there are 3 of us guys that are in the lower position, any of us honestly would be just fine for the promotion. The Reids arrived in Pittsburgh in January, expecting to spend about three years here for Matisse's operation and long recovery. But with the wait for the transplants expecting to take eight months to a year, they now realize they may have to stay closer to five years — and it's unclear whether the money they raised will be enough. If they spend only $60,000 annually — a tight stretch for a family of six — the money will run out in about four years. Often, coming to the United States is the only choice for families seeking complicated transplants, leaving people who have always worked dependent on charitable people and organizations. On rare occasions, they are forced to return home. "There's no provision whatsoever, even for humanitarian grounds, to allow these people to work," said Bruce Larson, director of the international personnel office at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., which treated about 8,000 foreigners last year at its hospitals, including several hundred children. The federal government does not track how many of the millions of people who come here on tourist visas are seeking medical care. Working with the Mayo Clinic and St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., said he plans to sponsor a bill that would grant work permits to parents of children who need more than six months of medical care. But it could get hung up in the bitter debate over immigration reform. Cohen wants to attach his bill to the broader reform legislation, which collapsed in the Senate in June. "I should hope it would have support. It's logical, it's humane," Cohen said. "I can't imagine anyone thinking this would be a security risk. It's just a humanitarian issue." Matisse was born on Christmas Day 2000 with chronic idiopathic intestinal pseudo-obstruction, a disorder in which the small or large intestines lose their ability to contract and push food, stool and air through the gastrointestinal tract. It affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States and is most common in children and the elderly. The cause is unknown but symptoms include severe bowel problems — from vomiting and diarrhea to chronic pain. Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where Matisse is awaiting the triple transplant, treats fewer than 30 international patients a year. Years of lobbying convinced the New Zealand government to cover the $1.4 million cost of Matisse's planned transplants. Independently, the Reids also raised nearly $260,000 in donations to sustain Matisse and her three siblings — Rachel, 15, Kalani, 9 and Fraanz, 2 — during the years it will take Matisse to recover. "It's only the highly motivated or those with some resources to raise money to come to another country, whether it's England, France or the United States, can come," said Dr. George Mazariegos, director of pediatric transplants at Children's Hospital. "Right now the care is very disproportional to the need." Intestinal transplants have been done only about 1,300 times since 1989, nearly all in the United States, Mazariegos said. A study by a group of doctors in Columbus, Ohio, found that of eight children who underwent such transplants, two died a short while later. Of those who survived, the study found their lifestyles were significantly improved and at least three had normal bowel movements within 18 months. For the hundreds of foreigners who come to America every year seeking medical care, the issue of finances is ever present. Sometimes, medical care can take years, putting families in a financial bind. According to immigration attorneys, there are two alternatives for foreigners to receive work permits, and both are rarely effective. A family can open a small business. However, to ensure the business is viable they must invest at least $100,000. In this case, the owners of the business would have their visa status changed and they would get working papers. Getting hired by a research institute, such as a university, can also provide a work visa. However, there are just a few thousand such visas issued annually and they normally expire within days of the lottery. Non-profit research institutes, such as hospitals, do have an unlimited number of work visas that they can issue annually and a foreigner hired by such an institution could get working papers as well. Wayne Reid is a carpenter by trade and desperately wants to work — to keep busy and earn money for the family. He said he was offered under-the-table odd jobs but he refuses to do anything that might jeopardize his daughter's treatment.

What can I do? have endometriosis. I live in the state of Ohio, and the government seems to think that being paid $6.50 an hour is too much to be put on insurance. The job I have now doesn't offer it. I have lost quite a few jobs due to me not being able to preform and me not being able to show up on the days my pain is most servere. I started my period this morning, and it is by far the worst I have ever had. I had to call into work, and my boss told me to start looking for another job. I've only been employed there since late august. Can I collect unemployment? If not, what can I do? It took me a year to find this job because of what my resume looks like. I need answers asap. Please help me.

I am so tired of the Dems beating the same old dead horse!? Am I the only one here who is tired of hearing the Democrates and whinie liberals going on and on about how not enough is being done to rebuild New Orleans?? How about the residents of New Orleans who are still sitting around in free hotel rooms, and don't have a job yet, and can only feel sorry for themsleves. Are they capable of holding a hammer?? Can they not assist with the rebuilding of their own community?? I live in North East Ohio and in July 2006 entire neighborhoods were underwater. Trailers were washed down the river into Lake Erie. An entire condo complex was completely submerged. These people lost everything. But they didn't get national attention and they didn't sit around with their hands out waiting for the government to help them. They rolled up their sleeves, salvaged what the could and rebuilt elswhere. YES I have been to New Orleans both pre Katrina and post Katrina. I saw first hand how the poor citizens of New Orleans (especially ward nine) are doing in the aftermath. Alot, (not all, but alot) are living large on government welfare checks and FEMA money and even though almost all the local business are up and running, they can't seem to find a job. So don't preach to me about victimizing the victims. They are only victims because that is what they want to be. And if your such a good charible christian, why aren't you down there helping, HUH??? I went to help, but was so disellusioned by the bullshit I saw, I came home after a week with a new outlook on the so called "crisis" of New Orleans. And Ray Nagan is a boob!

I need money!!? Okay, so I live in Bedford Heights, Ohio. I been looking for a job and have not found one. I have signed up with almost every Temporary Agency there is available and they haven't called with a job. I live with my boyfriend and he works making enough to pay the bills. I went and filled out a application to start STNA classes at Montefiore Nursing Home in Beachwood, Ohio. I constantly keep calling the lady that hires and she doesn't return my phone calls. I know the next classes start April 21st. i know once I finish the classes within 3-4 weeks I have a guaranteed job making at least 11-12 hourly. But it doesnt seem like the lady is calling me back before next classes start. I went to my local Welfare Building to sign up for food stamps, cash advance and/or medicare. What I want to know is there anywhere that you know i could get government assistance. I have looked on websites and saw different options but either you have to pay for a kit, pay for the programs and etc.

Flipping through files at the local library a few months ago for a school project, my 16-year-old son chanced upon the deeds of the house in which we live. He already knew it was one of the oldest in Georgetown; now he learned that in 1807, it was owned by a Thomas Turner and valued at $3,500. But it was the valuation of this other property, listed so matter-of-factly in the records, that stopped him cold: Slaves, he realized, had once lived in our house. This awful knowledge set him on a quest for the hidden history of Georgetown, exposing unpalatable truths that had been lost, if not willfully forgotten, over the decades: that the supposedly chic Georgetown of today had once been the center of a thriving slave trade, a significant port of call for traffickers in human flesh transported in from Africa and plantations in Maryland and Virginia. Yet so obscured has this history become that not even most Washingtonians are aware of it. Nor are they aware of the flourishing black community, mostly descended from those slaves, that once occupied a large portion of Georgetown -- until a combination of legislative, social and economic pressures gradually forced nearly all the black people out, turning the neighborhood into the wealthy, effectively all-white enclave it is today. My son's research unearthed one part of this forgotten narrative of our neighborhood. A second hint lay in a curious Georgetown phenomenon that had always puzzled us: the continuing existence of several thriving black churches, filled every Sunday morning with African Americans who do not actually live here. The history of our own house, though, still seemed surreal -- until, that is, very recently. Deep in the bowels of our house, there is a crude crawl space beneath the basement, a darkly mysterious place in which it is impossible to stand upright. It is filled with an ancient cesspit, cavities, brickwork and ledges that I had vaguely assumed served some long-forgotten purpose; one of my least-favorite tasks is crawling into it to remove the bodies of our share of the huge Norway rats that swarm all over the neighborhood. A month or so ago, an electrician had to crawl into the space, and afterward I apologized that he'd had to do so. "No problem," he replied. "You can see that was where slaves did the cooking." For me, at least, the penny suddenly dropped. In that space below my house where only rats now live, we concluded, fellow humans had almost certainly cooked for Mr. Turner and his family -- and may even have slept there, too. This thought brought home to my family and me some realities of U.S. history that so many white Americans choose either not to know or to forget: the roots of racial animosity and why their legacy persists to this day. Lest we forget, there were neither blacks nor whites in Georgetown -- then known as Tahoga -- before British settlers came ashore around 1696. It was a peaceful village inhabited by the Nacotchanke Indians. Straightforward facts and precise dates of Georgetown history are difficult to establish; much of the subject is undocumented, and accounts differ. But the basic story is indisputable. The Indians were soon expunged by the settlers. Then, in the 18th century, white entrepreneurs realized that huge sums of money could be made from the insatiable demand -- in both Europe and the United States -- for the tobacco cultivated in Virginia and Maryland (of which Georgetown was then a part). Because of its position on the Potomac, Georgetown provided an ideal port from which ships laden with tobacco could sail to Europe; by the end of the 18th century, it was just about the largest tobacco port in the United States, an economic powerhouse to which slaves were brought to provide labor and to service the households of the tobacco merchants. Slavery, of course, is as old as humanity. European powers -- first Portugal, followed by Spain, France and Britain -- began abducting men and women from Africa to work as slaves in the New World. To its everlasting shame, Britain, my own country, was responsible for the transport of probably more than a million slaves, many of them to work in the sugar fields of the Caribbean. But at the point when English abolitionists were finally forcing an end to my country's slave trade, America's exploitation of slaves on its soil had not even reached its zenith. The year of Britain's Abolition of the Slave Trade Act -- 1807 -- has a special resonance for me, as it is the very year when Thomas Turner owned those seven slaves. I shudder to realize that just a two-minute walk from my house, a white man named John Beattie conducted a highly successful slave-trade business on what is now O Street, just east of Wisconsin Avenue, that flourished well into the second half of the 19th century. Blacks thus became essential economic tools for the development of Georgetown, but were simultaneously feared and rejected socially. The first Georgetown law to oppress them came as early as 1795, forbidding them to congregate in groups of seven or more. The 1800 Census showed that, in a population of 5,120 in Georgetown, there were already 1,449 slaves and 277 "free blacks." There was a lone exception to the congregating law: Blacks could go to church on the Sabbath. But they were still kept rigidly separate from whites. St. John's Episcopal Church, established in 1816 at 33rd and O streets NW, had an outdoor staircase built especially for blacks; it's still there today. That same year, hardly surprisingly, a handful of free black men managed to start their own tiny church -- which was to become Mount Zion United Methodist Church, one of the churches that remain a potent black force in Georgetown today. It was another half-century, though, before Mount Zion was allowed to have its own black minister. Its burial crypt, still visible at the church's cemetery at 27th and Q streets NW, was reputed to be a hiding place for escaped slaves fleeing to the North via the Underground Railroad. I imagine that at least the girls who formed part of the property of my house in 1807 were still alive when the 1848 "Black Code; Ordinances of the Corporation of Georgetown" was introduced. It is hard to convey the viciousness of the laws, so I will confine myself to just three examples: The code decreed that any black person swimming in the Potomac or Rock Creek at night "shall be publicly whipped"; that any black person who watched a cockfight could be punished with as many as 39 lashes; and that even flying a kite was punishable by whipping. That same year, 77 slaves tried to escape this kind of oppression on a ship called the Pearl; furious owners sent a posse on a steamer called the Salem to recapture them, and it caught up with the Pearl 140 miles downriver. The black flight from Georgetown was already beginning. But blacks were still being bought and sold here as late as November 1861. The next year, President Abraham Lincoln signed a local law that freed slaves eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation. Furious white merchants demanded compensation, and an "expert examiner of slaves" was brought in. After examining their teeth and general health, he assessed the overall value of the slaves of Georgetown, D.C., at $300,000. Georgetown's whites then voted against a Negro Suffrage Bill by 712 to 1, passing a motion describing it as "wholly uncalled for, and an act of grievous oppression." Blacks from the South, anticipating freedom, nonetheless poured into Georgetown. Between 1865 and 1870, its black population increased from 1,935 to 3,271. Over the next two or three decades, a skilled black working class started to emerge alongside a handful of black professionals. But countless laws and regulations that continued well into the 20th century prevented true economic and social emancipation: Only white passengers were allowed to ride on Georgetown's new electric streetcars, for example, enabling them to commute to Washington for well-paying jobs that were effectively denied to blacks. Then came a series of economic blows that began to seal the fate of Georgetown's blacks. The Potomac silted up, virtually ending the industrial effectiveness of Georgetown's harbor. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which flowed through Georgetown and was crucial to many businesses such as flour and paper mills, flooded disastrously in 1889. Blacks were the first to lose their jobs when countless firms went bust. By 1910, the black population of Georgetown had peaked, and when the Great Depression struck 19 years later, more and more blacks found themselves displaced by whites taking menial jobs. Perversely, FDR's New Deal then began to work against blacks in Georgetown. Thousands of well-paid white government workers poured into Washington, creating further demand for housing and pushing property prices ever higher in Georgetown. "The dispossession of the Negro resident [of Georgetown]," the Conference on Better Housing Among Negroes reported, "is jointly managed by the city's leading realtors and their allied banks and trust companies." Two pieces of legislation passed in the 20th century by none other than Congress itself, though, were the final straws for Georgetown's blacks. The ostensible purpose of the District of Columbia Alley Dwelling Act of 1934 was to get rid of slums; but I suspect that to a House with only one black member and a Senate with none at all, slums and blacks were synonymous. Then, in 1950, Congress passed the Old Georgetown Act "to preserve and protect places of historic interest," but it had the effect of making Georgetown's gentrification legally enforceable. It was pushed through despite fears from "Negro groups," The Washington Post reported at the time, that it "might drive them from the area." Less than a decade later, Georgetown's black population had dwindled to fewer than 3 percent, and in 1972 The Post noted that fewer than 250 remained, "so few that some Georgetown residents are unaware they are there." Blacks were thus becoming invisible by the time the likes of Democratic doyenne Pamela Harriman started creating Georgetown's all-white "social salons" of such ludicrous legend. Indeed, racism was so entrenched in the nation's capital that even the glamorous young Sen. John F. Kennedy voluntarily signed a deed containing a "restrictive covenant" when he bought his house on N Street NW in 1957, agreeing that the home should not "ever be used or occupied or sold, conveyed, leased, rented, or given to Negroes or any person or persons of the Negro race or blood." Which brings us full circle to 2006. My son and I went to Mount Zion church on a recent Sunday morning and met an 84-year-old black parishioner named Carter Bowman, who was born in Georgetown but who long ago moved out. With neat serendipity, we met three generations of Bowmans because his son and grandson, who attends university in England, happened to be visiting. But if you go three generations in the reverse direction, you find that all of Carter Bowman's great-grandparents were born and raised when slavery was at its most intense in Georgetown. For all I know, they could have resided in that crude basement in my house, or someplace like it. Knowing what I know now, I found it strangely moving when the Rev. Robert Slade, chief pastor at Mount Zion -- who doesn't live in Georgetown -- told my son that "when we didn't have anything, the church was our everything. . . . When there was nothing and no place to go, [it] was the one place to go." Slade's words, to us, explain why the emotional bonds to the black churches in Georgetown remain so strong. It took a 16-year-old to bring all these realities of life in Georgetown, past and present, home to me. As a foreigner who remains deeply attached to America, I find it bewildering how so self-reverential a country can proclaim that all men are created equal but then proceed to implement racist oppression that manifestly expresses the reverse. The truth that my son and I discovered is that for many decades, blacks in Georgetown were treated little better than rats. Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long, and they feel so betrayed by government, and when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. Will these colleges accept a 3.7999 GPA and 30 ACT score (see list)? ...not to mention, participation in three school sports, one private sector job, one state government internship, enrollment in two AP classes, and three college classes? I'm actually asking this on behalf of my younger brother (aren't I nice?) We come from a middle-class household in small town Kentucky. I know he can easily make it into any of our public universities. But, how about these schools, too? A. Vanderbilt B. Ohio State C. Tennessee D. Emory E. Virginia If he was to make it into any of those four schools, I know he'd definitely have to join the ROTC to have a shot of having most of his education paid for. But, is it worth his time in the first place to apply to those schools? All serious input welcome! The GPA is weighted, I believe. But, only one of the AP classes is factored into his GPA so far--none of the other AP or college classes are as of yet.
